Socratic seminar |
I, unfortunately, don't have an image for this project as I forgot to take a picture of my notes before discarding it.

In Humanities 12, we did a Socratic Seminar. We had been learning about the agricultural revolution and how farming was in the Neolithic age. After weeks of learning about this topic and how it greatly affected life then, we held a Socratic Seminar. In this Socratic Seminar, each student would come up with a claim about the topic we’ve been learning about and provide evidence from the materials we’ve been given. We had one extended class period to prepare for this and the following day we would discuss in groups of around 7-9 students for 10 minutes. We also had another 10 minutes to discuss a random yet appropriate topic with the same group.
The 21st Century Skill this assignment addresses well is Communication Skills. Communication Skills mean that students are able to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences for different purposes, using oral, written, and non-verbal communication. This activity was about taking something we had researched and then explaining our thoughts to a group of students. It was a discussion and each of us was able to express our thoughts in a civil manner to each other. Many of us had also written down notes that we would reference during the conversation.
I enjoyed doing this activity a lot. From what I remember, the conversation about the Neolithic Age was less of a conversation and more of a "This is my claim and evidence" and then it'd move on to the next person to share their thoughts. When we got to the random topic, it was much more of a discussion. My only issue is that we didn't have a lot of time to discuss and I wish we had more. I think when we got to the random topic, it become much more interesting and people were talking to each other much more. However, time was something that was out of our control. If we could do this activity again, I'd like to have more time discussing.
